Simha Farms

A trip was long pending in our group of friends and we wondered about the perfect place to visit that would satisfy all our needs – to relax, to be with nature, to have fun, to catch up on some photography, to connect with ourselves, to disconnect from stress, to have some amazing food, to travel or just chill -Simha farms was the first place that came to mind.

I had visited this place a few years back and it felt like the perfect place for all of us to visit. Tucked away in Madodi near Nittur, at a 400 kms distance from Bangalore, Simha farms is also very ideal for those who enjoy long drives.

The entrance to the farm

The homestay was started by Adithya Biloor, an award-winning ace photographer himself. With meticulous attention to detail, he has ensured the place has the perfect blend of old-world charm with all the modern-day comforts.

As we drove in on a warm summer day, realistic-looking figurines of humans and animals greeted us at every turn and watched us intently from beneath the tall areca nut trees and the coffee plantations. The man behind all this artwork is Mr.Udaya Simha, Adithya’s father, whose talent shines out exquisitely all over the farm.

Looking out

The heat of the day had sapped us. But as we sat in the central dining area, sipping the instantly energizing cool Kokum juice that welcomed us, we were instantly revived.

Let’s go visit the area and you can decide for yourselves.

The central dining area:
The central dining area is quaint with a sloping tiled roof and a corridor with red oxide flooring running all around the dormitory. Low glass top tables with hand-painted murals on the wood underneath add a subtle colorful touch to this entire set. Especially during the rains, this is a perfect place to just hang around, chat, watch birds or just enjoy the incredibly tasty authentic Malnad cuisine.

Perfect combination of colors

The accommodation:
Simha Farms has 2 mud cottages, 2 new cottages, a villa and a dormitory. We were in the new cottages, so I’ll be sharing some images of that here, but the other images are available on the official website and Instagram links, which I’ll share below.

A view of the cottages

Generous sitting area outside
the cottages

The new cottages are a short walk from the dining area. They are surrounded by tall trees all around and sit just above a ledge. The generous sit-out with a comfortable easy chair and the tall windows in the room make sure a part of nature accompanies you into the room too.

I realized that for the first time in a very long time, I could again smell nature and hear silence and it was magical.

Vibrant and cozy rooms

Large scenic windows

To the dressing area

What attracted my attention first was the perfect combination of the vibrant blue, white and mustard tiles and the mustard-colored walls in the spacious room. The cottages can comfortably accommodate 3 people each. The high sloping tiled roof ensures good lighting and air circulation all day.

Just beyond the room is the equally spacious dressing area. Here the tiled roofs are adorned with skylights, adding to both the ambience and effective lighting.

The shower cubicle

Rustic look yet modern washroom

A very charming yet spacious washroom with all modern amenities in the most interesting setting and combination of colors, tiles and designs sits next to the dressing area. The washroom also receives ample natural light during the day through the skylights.

The surroundings:

As I had mentioned earlier, these cottages are set amidst tall areca nut trees. But there are other multiple varieties of trees around and the ample greenery attracts birds of all kinds. We were entertained all night by the calls of a peacock roaming around on the farms.

View from the room.

Outside the dining area

Hornbills, Drongos, Orioles, Bulbuls, Minivets, etc. are all both visitors and regulars to the farm. Birdwatchers and nature photographers can spend days together here, without even having to leave the place for better sightings or photography opportunities.

The TT Table

Badminton court

For others who are not into birding or photography, a badminton court and a TT table await. We made sure we did full justice to the TT table after our daytime outings. Carrom and chess options were also available, but we chose to hog the TT table for the most part.

Just going around the farm and knowing, learning and understanding the farm activities can be both an educational and an inspiring experience.

The Food:

The amazing food

We were treated to multiple varieties of authentic Malnad cuisine during all the 3 meals. Each time it was different with mind-boggling combinations. You may have to stay there for more than a week to taste at least most of the dishes. If you are a foodie, this can be your heaven.

Be warned. It is extremely easy to overeat this amazing food. I am telling you from experience.

What to know:

The network is a bare minimum. We had one spot near the dining area to make calls, which we did a couple of times a day. But the best thing is that once you are there, you can disconnect to connect with yourself most amazingly. If you are leaving the city for a break, please don't take the city there with you.

It is the most amazing place for young and old alike.

Seasons to visit:

Peak summer can be extremely hot and sticky and peak monsoon can be tricky. But apart from that, all seasons are perfect for lounging, relaxing, chilling, having fun, exploring or just being.
